Ender is a strong individual. When Colonel Graff comes to take him from his family he leaves with the understanding that his life was not meant for earth. Ender is the third child of the family and the government had only allowed his birth because his parent's gene potential is what they needed for their war organization. He departs without fuss when he leaves his family behind with only a small goodbye which is not common among the typical child.

19 boys as well as Ender aboard the shuttle to Battle School. Graff tells the group that Ender is the only one who will succeed and they all become jealous and despise of him. A boy decides to aggravate Ender seeing that he looked defenseless because of his embarrassment of being set apart. In return Ender does not hesitate to defend himself and throws him across the room. Gravity is no longer present and the action resulted in a broken arm for the boy.

The group arrives to their new home and they pick their bunks. Ender is left with last of the choices but doesn't not let his disappointment show. Ender soon learns that the injured boys name is Bernard. The boy has started his own click of people to make him feel alone. Ender decides to fight back but in the way of his smart thinking. Hacking into their desk's system he figures out a way to send a message to everyone with Bernard's name as the signature. He humiliates him and in turn gains friends that had been bullied and been friends with Bernard.
